Winter Sports
Winter sports begin at the end of November, immediately following the Thanksgiving holiday. Making the most of our two superb
gym facilities and using the squash courts at the Millbrook School nearby, Dutchess Day School students have the opportunity
to play basketball, volleyball or squash. All winter sports teams are coed.
Basketball has two teams, varsity (predominantly seventh and eighth graders) and junior varsity (predominantly
fifth and sixth). Each team has averaged 8 to 10 players over the last 5 years. All practices and home games take place in the
Bontecou Gymnasium. Our opponents are largely the same schools we compete against in soccer and field hockey.
Volleyball comprises students in fifth through eighth grades. It has averaged approximately 14 players over
the last 5 years. Practice and home games take place in the lower school gym. Our main opponent is Rumsey Hall, one of the few
middle schools with a winter volleyball team.
Squash is a more recent addition to the winter sports program and has proved very popular. We practice and
play matches on courts at the Millbrook School. DDS is one of the few middle schools in the area to play squash, so our
opponents are mostly high school recreational or “third” teams. We play against Indian Mountain, Millbrook, Trinity
Pawling and Westover.
