Our History, Our Community
Dutchess Day School was founded in the 1950s by a group of parents interested
in offering their children the advantages of a small-school environment in the
Millbrook area.  While the community we serve has expanded to include students
from numerous towns in New York and Connecticut, the original sense of
community established when 3 teachers and 19 students first met in rented
quarters in 1955 continues to this day. Original founding members and former
parents continue to work side by side with current parents to support and serve
the Dutchess Day School community and to play an active role in the life of our
school.

Ours is a small community – 174 students and 30 teachers – and our size allows
each of us to enjoy the rewards of belonging to a lively extended family.  Students
at every level interact with each other through both formal programs (older
students read to younger students and all school assemblies are held weekly)
and informally (during lunch, recess, and school sponsored events). Our
surroundings are warm and hospitable, reminiscent of the private home the
school once was.  The layout of the school also encourages close interaction with
all classes under one roof and the shared use of the art, music, library, computer
room, gymnasiums, playing fields, etc.

Parents are an integral part of our school community serving as room parents,
chaperoning on class trips, volunteering in school fund raisers and community
events, and serving as role models when they visit classrooms to share their
expertise and life experiences.  Through an active Parents Association, events
including the Book Fair and the May Marketplace, and presentations by various
visiting speakers bring the entire Dutchess Day School community together in the
spirit of family that is so fundamental to our school.
