DDS Exhibits Childrens Art at Rhinebeck Savings Bank

On Saturday, February 27, 2010, an art show featuring the work of Dutchess Day School students, opened at the Atrium Gallery of the Rhinebeck Savings in Rhinebeck, NY. It was a collaborative effort coordinated by art teacher Alison MacFarlane and the bank's marketing department. The show concluded on Wednesday, March 31, 2010.

The fifth grade art class at Dutchess Day School created a collection of images focusing on the work of Hudson River School artists. The students studied various artists from this movement and each chose a painting by one of the artists to copy for their own paintings. Students intensively examined the composition, coloring, lighting and fine detail of the original paintings for several weeks. In addition to the challenge of achieving the effect and lighting that the Hudson River School painters are so famous for, the students wrote art history papers and visited the Olana Historic Site, home and art studio of artist Frederic Edwin Church. This exhibit was a wonderful example of the collaborative work between the art and history programs at Dutchess Day School.

At Dutchess Day students learn to appreciate and understand art through lessons in art history and in collaborative lessons with other disciplines, such as history, math, and science. All of Dutchess Day's Students are a part of a community arts outreach program that loans artwork for display at hospitals, libraries, and schools.
