Last week, storyteller Loraine Hartin-Gelardi captivated our Lower School students with an enchanting assembly filled with stories, imagination, and wonder. Through the magic of storytelling, students were transported to new worlds, sparked their imaginations, and experienced the joy of bringing stories to life. It was a wonderful reminder that a great story can open doors to endless possibilities.
At DDS, the arts are not an add-on. They are an essential part of our curriculum. EVERY student experiences both art and music several times each week, with 100% participation. Every child has the opportunity to create, experiment, perform, listen, and discover new ways to express themselves. At a time when many schools are facing difficult choices about arts programming, DDS continues to invest in the creative experiences that help children develop confidence, imagination, collaboration, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
Math You Can See. Math You Can Do. At DDS, Lower School math is hands-on, visual, and designed to help students understand the why behind the numbers. Our Singapore Math–based approach uses concrete materials, visual models, problem-solving, and discussion to help students build strong mathematical understanding and confidence. Rather than simply memorizing procedures, students explore ideas, make connections, and develop strategies they can use in new situations.
In our Lower School, everyday moments - playing outside, sharing a laugh, and learning alongside friends - help children build the confidence, connection, and sense of belonging that make school feel like home.
Science in Action: Our Upper School scientists have been diving into hands-on exploration, putting their learning to work in the lab. Students investigated the properties of metals, nonmetals, and metalloids, sorting elements by conductivity, luster, and malleability. They also explored double displacement reactions, worked with Bunsen burners, and conducted flame tests watching compounds light up in brilliant colors.
From beakers to burners, students are learning science by doing: asking questions, testing ideas, observing results, and discovering how scientific concepts come to life.
Our Preschool program is a place where young children feel known, supported, and excited to learn. Through play, exploration, creative experiences, and caring relationships, children build confidence, make friends, and develop a strong foundation for the years ahead.
A Perfect Night for Movie Night! What a wonderful evening together! With perfect weather, happy faces all around campus, delicious food trucks, and plenty of popcorn and candy, Movie Night was a night to remember. We are so grateful for the generosity and spirit of our DDS parents. You are what makes this community so special, and we’re incredibly thankful for the moments you help create for our children and families.
